What is MBA?
There has been a trend
of increasing, stagnant and decreasing demand for MBA. Many are pursuing and
teaching MBA/Online MBA without even realizing what it should attempt to inculcate. I am
attempting to capture the essence of the program at the same time maintaining that
it is not exhaustive.
MBA Programs Should Focus:
English Communication Skills
The most essential
element which emerges, with lot of research and analysis going into it, is to
be able to communicate confidently and fluently in English. Add to that the
basic understanding of management concepts and precepts to be able to interact
at different forums with confidence and you are creating the right recipe for an
employable person.
Many students posses
basic ability to speak in English; it just requires a little extra effort to
develop the fluency and knowledge to communicate confidently.
Right Attitude
Responsibilities in
business profile require ability to work in team and get work out of others,
for this, it is essential to possess the right attitude. You will always not encounter
people who will be supportive and cooperative; yet, the work needs to be done.
Your attitude will sail you through most difficult of bosses, colleagues,
clients and team members.
Professionalism
By professionalism I
mean all the things forming the part of professional behavior, important ones
being:
Punctuality
– meeting deadlines is an inherent part of business.
Impersonal – being impersonal does not mean
that you have to be unemotional it implies not taking organizational decisions personally.
Understanding the bigger picture and releasing that sacrificing personal gain
is important to meeting organizational objective.
Discipline – without discipline it is difficult
to achieve consistent results. In fact the school education is designed to
inculcate discipline.
Responsive – responding quickly and positively
to the needs of the bosses, colleagues, clients and team members is a virtue
which will get you places. This does not mean that you need to agree to
everything. It only implies responding to mails and acknowledging them so that
the other person can get a closure whatever the outcome.
Presence of Mind – like common sense it is the most
uncommon thing to find. In critical situation which one is bound to encounter
on the job it is your presence of mind which shows your alacrity to resolve the
issue.
Business Sense
The last but not the
least, business sense implying the knowledge of specialization and core field
besides ability to apply it to business situations. This requires ability to
logically analyze given situation/problem and provide solutions. Being able to
evolve win-win solutions leading to positive outcome for all parties involved.
This also requires ability to look at the bigger picture and willingness to
lose wars to win battles in market place.
With a focused effort
to inculcate the above any candidate can visualize a successful business
career.
