Why MBA?

22:07 Dr. Monica Gupta 17 Comments

A question often asked from me is ‘Why should one pursue an MBA?’ The answer is not as simple as the question. MBA has become a sort of necessity for many to be employable. To arrive at the answer, first read the reasons below:

1. You are always thinking you probably selected the wrong course for your graduation.
2.  You have finished your graduation yet you lack technical/domain knowledge.
3.  You have completed graduation but you lack confidence on self.
4.  You are a graduate yet you can’t speak fluently in English.
5.  You are active on facebook/whatsapp, any other platform you find yourself tongue tied.
6. Any problem requiring simple analysis is not only difficult for you but also impossible to solve.
7.  You become fearful if someone asks you any probing question.
8.  You know Math but are unable to apply it in real life situation.
9.   You want to do a job but can’t clear interviews.
10. You are confused what you should do now as the road seems to have ended.

Should I get an MBA?

In case any of these apply to you and your answers are in the affirmative then you should pursue MBA. In case you want to understand in more detail the analysis of the current situation which results in this reasoning is given below.

Graduation

After meeting and interacting with hundreds and thousands of students seeking admission in MBA or otherwise, a thing that got affirmed every time that the graduation, in most cases than not contributes very little to the students’ knowledge, communication skill or confidence. Therefore, MBA is more about harnessing communication skills, enhancing self confidence and inculcating business sense thus making them employable.

On the Job Training

There was a time when companies had the resources and the will to train new entrants. They would invest in at least 3-6 months of training on the job. Trainee, trainee engineer and management trainee were popular terms. Not now, companies want the employees to be work ready and start performing and delivering on joining. In this scenario, companies neither have time nor the resources to devote towards training process of new entrants.

In a way, it made sense earlier, because job loyalty was a virtue which was rewarded and appreciated. Employees too were not only comfortable but also happy working for the organization for at least 4-5 years, if not more, before looking for a change. So, companies were well compensated for their investment in employee training with the employee delivering over a longer span of time.  However, now companies are always on the lookout for fresh talent and new ideas that the new employees bring in. Similarly, employees too start seeking a change or better opportunity after 2-3 years. This being the case, investment in training the fresh entrants does not remain viable. Hence, the expectation from an employee is to start delivering immediately on joining the organization.

Aspirations

About 15-20 years back the expectations of fresh graduates and post graduates were grounded. The purpose was to secure a job first and then seek higher compensation over time commensurate with enhancement of skills and competence. What I see now is that there is a mismatch between acquired skills and expected compensation probably reflecting the difference in average maintenance cost of a graduate 15-20 years back and now. In the world replete with mobile phone, laptop, tab, internet access on phone and computer, Mc Donald and the likes, Multiplexes, amusement parks etc the pocket needs to be deeper for what is considered basic sustenance. In order to justify such a package the skills expected by Industry is inconsistent with the skills possessed.

Mass Production of Education

Mass production in any other industry does not in any way mean dilution of quality. Unfortunately, in Higher Education sector in India, mass availability of higher education through Public private partnership (PPP) has lead to dilution of quality of education. If an Electronics engineer cannot explain the difference between an electronic and electrical device, it leaves much to be said. Similarly, if software engineer cannot name top 4-5 Indian IT companies, you wonder the objective with which he set out pursue the course. Off course, there can be many such examples from other disciplines as well. This indicates that such a student himself is not confident of the course he pursued and lacks the technical/domain knowledge to be employable. The all embracing MBA comes to rescue as the course of last resort.

What used to be a course pursued by persons with a few years of experience to enable them to grasp and apply the complexities of business and seek superior role and business profile has actually become a course which is being pursed to become employable. For these reasons, jobs earlier being offered and taken by graduates are now being offered and taken by MBA graduates.

Given that business administration is the most appropriate education for any business, the bottom line is that MBA qualification or knowledge of the traits of business administration is and will always be in demand by any organization dealing with any kind business. All you need to be is focused and pragmatic and a good career awaits you.

First question is “what is MBA?” MBA means master of business administration but according me mastery of business administration. Then your first question is “what is mastery?”
Mastery- mastery means skilled, proficient, handling task and activity and all aspect of a particular area or domain. Then your next question is “what is business”?
In business give somethings to customer and finally make a profit/An organization or economic system where goods and services are exchanged for one another or for money. Then your third question is “what is administration?” Administration means management. Then you will think “what is management?” I want to tell you management is getting things done with/ through people and guide the people. MBA is a professional degree. MBA is very popular course. It is a worldwide course and it is a master degree. First time MBA start United States. The MBA degree originated in the United States in the late 19th century the country industrialized and companies sought scientific approaches to management. MBA cover various areas in business such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources and operations in a manner most relevant to management analysis and strategy. MBA is two years program. Many collages provide part time and full time classes between this years. When any student qualified MBA then he is fulfill by confident and skill. He has a lot of idea of management. He always is looking professional. His mind becomes a logical mind.

  5. Absolutely, when comes time after graduation of selection of the right course according own Ability, situation, interested and perfection of the subject knowledge then sometimes students failed in it who shouldn’t happened with students which issues students have failure in life instead of able to success.
Therefore students should always identify own ability, courage, perfection, maturity and most important is interested.
    Why MBA?
It’s an interested and higher level professional course and I want to suggest to everyone who has completed graduation in commerce, MBA is the best for them but it may best for them who are in any streams, Doesn’t matter but matter is only work hard.
No any things in the world which can get without hard work, so if you can do hard work and be effort little then MBA will be best option for you to make a career with professional life image.

  9. Yes, above statement is relevant and i appreciate it but, as it is a crucial decision that one take for next 2 year which ultimately decides the next 40 years of life,so it should be well planned and being taken with full calm of mind.Although MBA/PGDM is fastrack course that makes an individual ready for the industry. But being in the course of action of while pursuing Management course faculty should be supportive as it being feel sometime that students are being suppressed by unexpected and unorganized decision which lower their enthusiasm and confidence. However being specialized
in specific domain enhances one's quality of performance as MBA makes an individual dynamic for every domain. It should be well versed and being focused on developing skills not on just passing the exams and submitting assignments which is no use for competitive world.
